Provence in autumn: what to do around Aix-en-Provence
September to November is Provence's most secret season. Truffles, the grape harvest, golden light on the Sainte-Victoire — here is what you miss if you only come in July.
Summer Provence belongs to everyone. Autumn Provence belongs only to those who know. The tourists have departed, the light has turned golden, and the territory's true pleasures are finally revealed.
The grape harvest by private access
September and October bring the harvest to the estates of the Pays d'Aix. Some winemakers open their cellars to private groups — tastings in the barrel room, a harvest workers' meal, a night among the vines. Experiences impossible to book online.
Truffle hunting
From November onwards, the black truffle begins to appear in the hills around Aix. A session with a local truffle hunter and his dog is one of the most authentic experiences we offer.
The Sainte-Victoire without the crowds
The massif is transformed in autumn. The colours change week by week, the raking morning light is that which Cézanne sought. This is the season for walks with a naturalist guide.
The producers' markets
Wild mushrooms, aged cheeses, new-season olives, heather honey — the autumn markets of the Pays d'Aix have a generosity quite different from those of summer.
We organise bespoke stays in Provence whatever the season. Tell us your dates and wishes.
